SUMMARY:National Take Back Initiative
DESCRIPTION:The Yuma Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public an opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired\, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. \nBring your pills for disposal to the Yuma Police Department\, 1500 S. 1st Avenue on Saturday\, April 22\, 2023 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. \nThe service is free\, and anonymous. We will not ask or request for your identification. \nWe are unable to accept syringes\, sharps\, liquid products\, or illegal drugs due to the hazardous conditions they create for the personnel destroying the pharmaceuticals. \nThis initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. \nMedicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion\, misuse and abuse. \nRates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high\, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. \nStudies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends\, including from the home medicine cabinet. \nIn addition\, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash— pose potential safety and health hazards.

SUMMARY:Pizza with the Police
DESCRIPTION:Yuma Police Department to host Pizza with the Police on April 26\, 2023 \n On Wednesday\, April 26\, 2023\, the Yuma Police Department is inviting community members to come together in an informal\, neutral space to discuss community issues\, build relationships and enjoy a slice of pizza. Police Chief Thomas Garrity\, sworn officers and non-sworn personal will be on hand to answer questions or just sit and chat. \n The event will be held between 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday\, April 26\, 2023 at Round Table Pizza\, 2544 West 16th Street. All Community members are invited to attend. \n Pizza with the Police provides a unique opportunity for community members to ask questions and learn more about the department’s work in the City of Yuma neighborhoods. \n The majority of contacts law enforcement has with the public happen during emergencies or emotional situations. Those situations are not always the most effective times for relationship building with the community and some community members may feel that officers are unapproachable on the street. Pizza with the Police breaks down barriers and allows for a relaxed\, one-on-one interaction. \n The program aims to advance the practice of community policing through improving relationships between police officers and community members one slice of pizza at a time. \nPlease contact Sgt. Johnny Vidrio with any questions. Johnny.Vidrio@yumaaz.gov

SUMMARY:Visit Yuma Open House
DESCRIPTION:Visit Yuma Moves Travel Forward This National Travel and Tourism Week \nThis year marks the 40th anniversary of the annual industry celebration \nNational Travel and Tourism Week\, (NTTW) the annual celebration of the contributions of the U.S. travel industry\, will spotlight the essential role that travel will play in driving economic growth and innovation through the theme #TravelForward. \n“The travel industry fuels every industry—our industry’s success is the nation’s success\,” said U.S. Travel Association President and CEO Geoff Freeman. “This week is a prime opportunity to elevate the message that travel is essential to moving America’s economy forward.” \nEstablished in 1983\, NTTW is an annual tradition to mark the U.S. travel industry’s role in our economy. The U.S. travel industry generated a $2.6 trillion economic output in 2022 and supported 15 million jobs\, fueling communities\, small businesses and working families across the country. \nTravel spending also generated nearly $160 billion in federal\, state and local taxes in 2022—revenue that helped fund critical public services while saving each U.S. household an average of $1\,270 in taxes. \nIn Yuma the travel industry drives $200 million in direct local spending in Yuma County and supports over 1\,600 jobs held by Yuma County residents. \nVisit Yuma is recognizing travel’s essential contributions by opening its Visitor Information Center for a casual networking event and celebration on Wednesday May 10\, 2023\, from 3pm to 5pm. There will be local food\, travel related giveaways\, and conversation with your favorite travel experts. \nSaid Marcus Carney: “Travel is at the heart of Yuma\, powering a strong economy\, creating jobs and strengthening our community’s culture and identity. This National Travel and Tourism Week\, we are proud to celebrate all that travel does for our community now\, and all that it will contribute in the future.”
