DESCRIPTION:The community is invited to join the Arizona Western College Jazz Ensemble for its spring end-of-semester concert. \n\nThe jazz band concert will feature challenging music the students have been working on this semester and will also feature AWC vocal students Dorothy Sánchez and Charles Shepherd. \nThe performance will be held on Wednesday\, May 8\, at 7 p.m. at the AWC Theater located on the Yuma Campus\, 2020 S. Ave 8E. A campus map can be found here. \n\nThe concert is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted to benefit student scholarships. \nThis year\, the Jazz Ensemble has previously performed during the Mardi Gras event on Main Street in Yuma\, and has also played as part of the Village Jazz Series.

The Yuma Police Department’s Honor Guard Team will post the United States Flag and conduct a 21-gun salute in remembrance of our fallen brothers and sisters. \nThe entire community is invited to help us remember and honor the Law Enforcement Officers who gave their lives while serving the Yuma area communities.

DESCRIPTION:The Yuma High School art program will be hosting its annual end of year art exhibition “Jailhouse Art\,” on May 20\, 2024\, in the Snider Auditorium hallway. \n“I’m excited to show others what I’ve created and worked hard on\,” YHS Advanced Placement (AP) Art and Design student Leslie Romero said. “I decided to showcase a painting of a beach at night that I worked on in my AP art class and I chose it because I like nature.” \nThe “Jailhouse Art” exhibition will include 3-dimensional sculptures\, paintings\, and drawings that students have chosen to showcase from what they worked on throughout the year. All students from Art 1\, 2\, 3\, and AP\, will be participating in the exhibition. \n“I want everyone to come see what students have been making and the ideas they’ve been exploring\,” YHS art teacher Jillian Vanhorn said. “It’s a great chance for students to showcase their work to family\, friends\, and members of the community.” \nThe exhibition is free to the public from 5-7 p.m. and Yuma High students will also have an early-access opportunity to check out the exhibition during their fifth and sixth period classes.

SUMMARY:Kindness Foundation Fundraiser at Panda Express
DESCRIPTION:In Yuma County\, at-risk youth and first-generation high school seniors face significant barriers that impede their academic success and future prospects. With a decline in post-secondary education enrollment rates\, many of these students are left with limited options and are more susceptible to engaging in drug-related activities and criminal behaviors. The lack of interest in pursuing educational opportunities exacerbates the cycle of poverty and increases the likelihood of youth turning to drugs and crime for alternative paths. Urgent intervention is required to address this pressing issue and provide comprehensive support to these students. As part of the solution\, our “First Generation” initiative aims to not only provide laptops for academic success but also to support sports activities by covering school fees and providing allowances for basic sports necessities. Through these efforts\, we aim to empower at-risk youth to pursue education and healthy activities\, ultimately breaking the cycle of disadvantage in our community.\n\nOur goal for next academic year\, May 2025\, is to offer 100 FREE/Complimentary laptops to upcoming first generation/ low-income high school seniors pursuing college opportunities.

All water collected will go to Yuma Crossroads Mission where they distribute water to those less fortunate. . This event will be held on May 31 from 11:00AM – 3:00PM at 3136 East 33rd Place. We encourage people to help out our community by dropping off cases of water or any other closed water containers. This event will be a drive by\, and we will have runners getting the Caseses of water off your vehicle. SUMMARY:Water Safety Day
DESCRIPTION:The Greater Yuma Water Safety Alliance (GYWSA) invites residents to have fun while learning more about water safety and drowning prevention by attending Water Safety Day. \nWater Safety Day will be held on Saturday\, June 1\, from 1–6 p.m. at the Valley Aquatic Center\, (4381 W. 18th St.)\, and the public can swim for free. Staff from the City of Yuma’s Fire Department and Parks and Recreation will offer a variety of safety demonstrations such as CPR\, lifejacket fittings\, swiftwater rescue and “Reach and Throw\, Don’t Go\,” a water rescue safety practice. Attendees will have the opportunity to visit water safety information and vendor booths ranging from aquatic organizations to pool and fencing contractors. In addition\, there will be music and giveaways! Food and beverages will be available for purchase. \nThe GYWSA encourages the community to practice the National Drowning Prevention Association’s five layers of protection: barriers and alarms\, supervision\, water competency/swim skills\, life jackets\, and emergency preparation.
