SUMMARY:Visit Yuma Open House
DESCRIPTION:Visit Yuma Moves Travel Forward This National Travel and Tourism Week \nThis year marks the 40th anniversary of the annual industry celebration \nNational Travel and Tourism Week\, (NTTW) the annual celebration of the contributions of the U.S. travel industry\, will spotlight the essential role that travel will play in driving economic growth and innovation through the theme #TravelForward. \n“The travel industry fuels every industry—our industry’s success is the nation’s success\,” said U.S. Travel Association President and CEO Geoff Freeman. “This week is a prime opportunity to elevate the message that travel is essential to moving America’s economy forward.” \nEstablished in 1983\, NTTW is an annual tradition to mark the U.S. travel industry’s role in our economy. The U.S. travel industry generated a $2.6 trillion economic output in 2022 and supported 15 million jobs\, fueling communities\, small businesses and working families across the country. \nTravel spending also generated nearly $160 billion in federal\, state and local taxes in 2022—revenue that helped fund critical public services while saving each U.S. household an average of $1\,270 in taxes. \nIn Yuma the travel industry drives $200 million in direct local spending in Yuma County and supports over 1\,600 jobs held by Yuma County residents. \nVisit Yuma is recognizing travel’s essential contributions by opening its Visitor Information Center for a casual networking event and celebration on Wednesday May 10\, 2023\, from 3pm to 5pm. There will be local food\, travel related giveaways\, and conversation with your favorite travel experts. \nSaid Marcus Carney: “Travel is at the heart of Yuma\, powering a strong economy\, creating jobs and strengthening our community’s culture and identity. This National Travel and Tourism Week\, we are proud to celebrate all that travel does for our community now\, and all that it will contribute in the future.”

SUMMARY:Memorial Day Flag Raising Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:3rd Annual Flag Raising Ceremony \nJoin us to honor the men and women who gave their lives for our great country. \nDate: Memorial Day\, Monday\, May 29th 2023 \nLocation: Fire Station \nTime: 10:00 am \nFisher’s Landing Resort has known Memorial Day as the starting weekend of the summer season for decades. Everyone enjoys boating\, hanging on the sandbar\, BBQing\, and spending time with family and friends. My father (Randall Phillips) served in the United States Air Force and my sister and myself were taught from an early age to respect our flag\, take pride in our country\, and appreciate the men and women of the military who sometimes had to pay the ultimate price so that we could enjoy our freedoms. \nA few years back as I was riding through Pruitt City\, on Memorial Day I noticed there were so many American flags flying everywhere. I took pride in the fact that our River Community was so patriotic. I thought to myself we should do something on this holiday to show our collective appreciation for our Military and love for our Country\, and as I passed the Martinez Lake Fire Department\, I realized we could do a small flag raising ceremony for those of us who wanted to participate. \nI didn’t realize so many others in our community would jump on board with this idea. Fisher’s Landing bought a new flag (made in America) for this event and supported my efforts whole-heartedly! I asked my neighbor Cal Gunny Grimes if he could raise the flag & speak but he owns the Swallows Inn at San Juan Capistrano and Memorial Day Weekend is a huge work weekend for him. He then hooked me up with his friend and fellow Marine Reg Nelson who had a place on Swede’s Hill. Cal Gunny Grimes and Reg Nelson are a part of a group of Marines called the “Nights at the Round Table” and between these guys they have 236 years of service to our Country! (Thank you all for your service) \nThe moment I spoke to Reg Nelson\, he was a wealth of information on how to properly display and raise “Old Glory” and he said he would be honored to raise the flag for the ceremony. \nClick HERE for more information.

SUMMARY:Cancer Survivor and Caregiver Celebration Dinner
DESCRIPTION:National Cancer Survivors Day is Sunday\, June 4. On this day\, people around the world will unite to recognize cancer survivors\, raise awareness of the ongoing challenges these survivors face because of their disease\, and – most importantly – celebrate life. \nTo commemorate\, Relay For Life of Yuma County\, AZ is hosting a Cancer Survivor and Caregiver Celebration Dinner. We\ninvite everyone to join our community’s celebration. \n“Come see for yourself that\, despite its challenges\, life after cancer can be beautiful\, meaningful\, and joyous\,” says Ellie\nEvans\, spokesperson for Relay For Life of Yuma County. “You will find our community’s Cancer Survivor and Caregiver\nDinner celebration filled with hope\, camaraderie\, triumph\, and compassion as we recognize our community’s cancer\nsurvivors. We will also acknowledge the contributions of their families\, friends\, and healthcare providers and draw\nattention to the ongoing challenges faced by cancer survivors today.” \nHere in Yuma County\, Arizona\, we will celebrate with the return of our annual cancer survivor and caregiver\ncelebration dinner at the Pivot Point Conference Center. All cancer survivors are invited to attend with 1 guest for free.\nAny additional guests are welcome to purchase a general admission ticket for $50. RSVP is required\, contact Amber\nThornton at RelayForLifeofYuma@gmail.com by May 24th. \nAnyone living with a history of cancer – from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life – is a cancer\nsurvivor\, In the U.S. alone\, there are more than 18 million cancer survivors. \nBy 2030\, the number of cancer survivors in the U.S. is projected to increase to 22.2 million. As the number of survivors\ncontinues to grow\, it is becoming ever more important to address the unique needs of this population. In addition to\nfacing a serious illness\, cancer survivors must contend with rising drug costs; inadequate insurance coverage; difficulty\nfinding or keeping jobs; and ongoing physical\, emotional\, and financial struggles that can persist even after treatment\nends. \nConsidering these challenges\, our community must stand with these survivors on National Cancer Survivors Day\nand make a commitment to lessening the burden of cancer survival. \nAmerican Cancer Society Relay For Life unites communities to celebrate people who have been touched by cancer\, remember loved ones lost and take action for lifesaving change. Since 1985\, Relay For Life has raised $6.8 billion to help save lives from cancer. \nDollars raised each year by more than 250\,000 Relay participants across the country help support the American Cancer Society’s mission in countless ways\, including funding and conducting breakthrough research\, providing education and advocating for the needs of cancer patients and their families\, and providing essential services throughout their cancer journey. \nTo learn more about Relay For Life\, visit RelayForLife.org/YumaCountyAZ
