DESCRIPTION:The importance of voting will be front and center at the upcoming Cesar Chavez Celebration in Brawley\, with free interactive arts activities and theatrical sketches. The VIVA MAZE CIVIC ENGAGEMENT ARTS PROJECT\, organized by Los Amigos de la Comunidad\, Inc.\, (funded by a FAR SOUTH/BORDER NORTH grant)\, unites local artists (painters\, actors\, crafts\, cosplayers\, singers\, etc.) in educating and encouraging the Imperial Valley community to engage in civic activities\, specifically promoting “your vote is your voice.” Local award-winning filmmaker Roy Dorantes is the project’s Lead Artist/Practitioner; he brought the artists together and worked with them in creating the activities\, and will oversee the interactive presentation during the Chavez Celebration event and other VIVA events countywide through August. \nLADLC Executive Director Eric Reyes said\, “Voting is essential to healthy communities where the voices of many are heard\, not just a few. DESCRIPTION:Arizona Western College students from a variety of academic backgrounds will be presenting their projects and talents during the 2024 Student Showcase. \n \nThe community is invited to join for an academic art walk that includes musical\, poetry\, and dance performances\, artwork in a variety of media\, poster and digital presentations\, and more. The event will be held Wednesday\, March 27\, from 3:30-5:30pm in the AWC Library annex at the Yuma Campus\, 2020 S. Ave. 8E. \n“Please join us for this academic and performative artwork and learn from our amazing AWC students\,” said Ellen Riek\, AWC Professor of English. \nAll Showcase participants are eligible for $7\,500 in scholarships that will be announced during the event. Details regarding presenters and project descriptions will be posted here the day of the event. \n  \nSince 2008\, the event has served as a platform to highlight student projects\, and over time it has also become an opportunity for students from Yuma\, San Luis\, and Parker campuses to earn scholarships. \n  \nThe second annual campus-wide Open Mic will follow the Student Showcase from 6:00-8:00pm\, serving as a celebratory closing ceremony for the event.

DESCRIPTION:Creative Writing students\, with the support of the Liberal Arts Division of Arizona Western College\, will host the second annual campus-wide Open Mic from 6:00-8:00pm on Wednesday\, March 27\, at the AWC Yuma Campus Academic Library. This event is the celebratory closing ceremony for the annual Student Showcase. \nWriters\, musicians\, dancers\, comics\, magicians\, and spoken-word artists of all types are welcome. Any four- to six-minute performance suitable for a small stage in front of a live audience is welcome. However\, pre-registration is recommended as performance slots are limited.Scholarships ranging from $700 to $100 are available as prizes for student performers.“The Open Mic’s purpose is to create a relaxing performance space for artists from the college community to gather and enjoy one another’s work\,” said Professor of English David Kern.While AWC encourages freedom of expression in artistic matters\, participants are asked to refrain from gratuitous references to violence or slurs based on race\, ethnicity\, gender\, or sexual orientation. From 9 a.m. to noon\, a video composed of photos from current VFW Post 9305 and written testimonials from local and national Vietnam Veterans will be available on a big screen TV at the event. \nThe ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. with a traditional gun salute. \n“It’s important to continue to thank our Veterans for the service they provided to our country\,” said City of El Centro Mayor Sylvia Marroquin. “Locally\, we have several Vietnam Veterans we want to honor and acknowledge for their heroic service.” \nAccording to the U.S. Department of Defense website\, the observation commemorates the service and sacrifices made by nearly 3 million service members who served in Vietnam. Food!\nAll the details coming soon!\nHere’s what you want to know:\nFriday night club racing/practice 7pm – Midnight\nThis is a great way to get your RC’s tuned up and ready for the big event on Saturday\, We will run this as a regular club night of racing. Podium finishers will get their Fast Eddie’s sticker\, but no prizes will be awarded on Friday night.\nSaturday Track opens 10am\, qualifiers Noon -3pm (or when we get done) Main Events 6pm – finish.\nThis is our BIG EVENT! Longer qualifiers. Longer Mains. More classes.\nOn Saturday we will add a NOVICE class (Under 12) and we will bring back the Run What You Brung Class! These are “exhibition” classes and will pay a reduced entry fee. No payouts for podium finishers\, but awards will be given.\nFees: Either Friday OR Saturday\, $20 first class\, $10 each additional class. BOTH Friday AND Saturday\, $25 first class\, $10 each additional class.\nClass rules can be found on the Fast Eddie’s RC Racing page on Facebook. Cars will be tech’d prior to racing. Any podium finishers will be tech’d immediately following their race.

DESCRIPTION:WHAT’S IT LIKE?\nImagine an Escape Room crossed with childhood games crossed with behind the scenes tours at local businesses and you’ll have an idea. Past challenges have included “cracking” a safe\, using hospital equipment to play the Operation board game\, carrying an egg on a spoon\, delivering newspapers to play houses\, and using professional screen printing equipment to print your own tote. What will the 2024 challenges be? They’re a secret\, but we can share one thing – they’ll be challenging but fun! \nHOW IT WORKS\nThe teams will be provided with an initial starting point and registration time. There will be staggered starting times at set intervals based on the number of teams entered. The team’s starting time will be noted as the winner will be based on actual time plus penalties from their start to finish rather than who finishes first. \nAt the starting location\, the teams will be given their first challenge. When the first challenge begins\, the team’s starting time will be recorded. Upon completion of the first challenge\, the team will be given a checklist of the ten locations they must visit in order to complete the race. The team will then drive to the first location. \nAt each location\, the team will need to complete that location’s challenge. Once that challenge is complete\, the location representative will initial the team’s checklist and provide them with an envelope with puzzle pieces in it. Like the puzzle\, most challenges require thought and teamwork rather than physical strength. Everyone 18 and over are welcome! \nOnce the team has successfully completed the challenges at all ten locations\, the team will go to the finish line. Before a team can officially cross the finish line\, the team will be provided a table on which they must complete a puzzle using all the puzzle pieces received throughout the race. Upon successful completion of the puzzle\, the team’s completion time will be noted to calculate their total race time. \nThe winner will be the team that completes the race in the least amount of time. Cash prizes will be awarded! \nAll racers are invited to the post-race reception being held at Julieanna’s Steak & Seafood by Chef Eddie Guzman that evening.
