VIVA MAZE Civic Engagement Arts Project – Cesar Chavez Celebration

The importance of voting will be front and center at the upcoming Cesar Chavez Celebration in Brawley, with free interactive arts activities and theatrical sketches. The VIVA MAZE CIVIC ENGAGEMENT ARTS PROJECT, organized by Los Amigos de la Comunidad, Inc., (funded by a FAR SOUTH/BORDER NORTH grant), unites local artists (painters, actors, crafts, cosplayers, singers, etc.) in educating and encouraging the Imperial Valley community to engage in civic activities, specifically promoting “your vote is your voice.” Local award-winning filmmaker Roy Dorantes is the project’s Lead Artist/Practitioner; he brought the artists together and worked with them in creating the activities, and will oversee the interactive presentation during the Chavez Celebration event and other VIVA events countywide through August.

LADLC Executive Director Eric Reyes said, “Voting is essential to healthy communities where the voices of many are heard, not just a few. Voting is an opportunity to express our vision and demands about whom we choose to represent us and make our voice heard.”

What: VIVA MAZE Project will provide arts activities and presentations focused on civic engagement

Where: Cesar Chavez Celebration, 400 Main Street, Brawley

When: Saturday, March 23, 2024; 3PM-6PM

The Cesar Chavez Celebration runs from 3PM-11PM, featuring a concert from the legendary group TIERRA THE LEGACY, a Selena tribute, boxing and lucha libre, local music groups, and the annual “Si Se Puede” recognitions, this year going to legendary musician Rocky Padilla and baseball legend Sergio Romo.

Caltrans Free Dumpster Disposal Day in Brawley

Imperial Valley– Caltrans welcomes the public to bring non-hazardous, unwanted household items to the Clean California Dump Day in both El Centro and Brawley. Caltrans will have staff on-site to accept approved waste and debris free of charge on Saturday, December 16, from 8 A.M. to 12 P.M. (*or until capacity is reached at the site).

·       1102 Montenegro Way, El Centro CA 92243 – Caltrans El Centro Maintenance Yard

·       200 South Palm Ave, Brawley CA 92227 – Caltrans Brawley Maintenance Yard

The dump day events are part of Governor Gavin Newsom’s Clean California initiative, a sweeping $1.2 billion, multiyear clean-up effort led by Caltrans to keep roads and waterways free of litter, create thousands of jobs and transform state and local public spaces through beautification efforts. As part of the litter collection component, Caltrans is hosting free dump day events where the public can dispose of household waste safely and properly for free to decrease highway debris and illegal dumping. Caltrans District 11 has held more than 40 such events in San Diego and Imperial Counties since launching Clean California in Summer 2021.

Prohibited items that will not be accepted include hazardous waste (batteries, paint, oils, flammables, etc.), construction debris (concrete, dirt, asphalt, asbestos), compressed gas, aerosols, treated wood waste, refrigerators, and freezers. Four mattresses and four tires separated from the rims per household will be accepted. Scheduled events and prohibited items are subject to change. For more information and prohibited items please visit https://dot.ca.gov/caltrans-near-me/district-11/popular-links/freedumpster.

Caltrans reminds motorists to properly secure and tarp all cargo loads prior to driving. Transporting unsecured loads is unsafe, illegal, and pollutes California’s roads and waterways. Loads that are not tied down, enclosed, or secured by tarps or other means, may not be accepted.
