30th Annual Frankie L. Chavez Memorial Scholarship Fundraiser

Memorial Scholarship Fundraiser that was started in 1995 after our son Frankie and his friend Nathan Mata were killed in a car accident on December 4, 1993 in Calipatria. Frankie had just graduated in June from Brawley Union High School. Our event will be held at Hinojosa Park in Brawley, Ca. We will have live entertainment, Deep Pit BBQ plates for $12.00, (drive thru available) and our softball, and horseshoe tournaments. We will also raffle a 75 inch Toshiba 4K UHD Smart Fire TV and other prizes. It is our goal to raise money so that we may award scholarships to Brawley Union High and Calipatria High school seniors who will be attending college. In 2023, the Foundation awarded $16,900 in Scholarships to a total of 46 graduating seniors. Thanks to the Community of Imperial Valley for their continued support.

Caltrans Free Dumpster Disposal Day in Brawley

Imperial Valley– Caltrans welcomes the public to bring non-hazardous, unwanted household items to the Clean California Dump Day in both El Centro and Brawley. Caltrans will have staff on-site to accept approved waste and debris free of charge on Saturday, December 16, from 8 A.M. to 12 P.M. (*or until capacity is reached at the site).

·       1102 Montenegro Way, El Centro CA 92243 – Caltrans El Centro Maintenance Yard

·       200 South Palm Ave, Brawley CA 92227 – Caltrans Brawley Maintenance Yard

The dump day events are part of Governor Gavin Newsom’s Clean California initiative, a sweeping $1.2 billion, multiyear clean-up effort led by Caltrans to keep roads and waterways free of litter, create thousands of jobs and transform state and local public spaces through beautification efforts. As part of the litter collection component, Caltrans is hosting free dump day events where the public can dispose of household waste safely and properly for free to decrease highway debris and illegal dumping. Caltrans District 11 has held more than 40 such events in San Diego and Imperial Counties since launching Clean California in Summer 2021.

Prohibited items that will not be accepted include hazardous waste (batteries, paint, oils, flammables, etc.), construction debris (concrete, dirt, asphalt, asbestos), compressed gas, aerosols, treated wood waste, refrigerators, and freezers. Four mattresses and four tires separated from the rims per household will be accepted. Scheduled events and prohibited items are subject to change. For more information and prohibited items please visit https://dot.ca.gov/caltrans-near-me/district-11/popular-links/freedumpster.

Caltrans reminds motorists to properly secure and tarp all cargo loads prior to driving. Transporting unsecured loads is unsafe, illegal, and pollutes California’s roads and waterways. Loads that are not tied down, enclosed, or secured by tarps or other means, may not be accepted.

The Cattle Call Rodeo starts each performance with an opening ceremony followed by the Rough and Tough Wild Horse Race. There will be six PRCA events that include Bareback Riding, Saddle Bronc, Steer Wrestling, Tie Down Roping, Team Roping and Bull Riding. WPRA will feature the always exciting Barrel Race and then on to Team Penning which features five teams of local cowboys and cowgirls competing for the fastest time penning three steers. No rodeo would be complete without our fantastic bullfighters and rodeo clowns! The kids will enjoy our pre-show dollar dig and the crowd-pleasing mutton busting. Sunday is Family Day, bring the kids early and enjoy the free pony rides and petting zoo.
